Why do you think what you do about the subject of love? Where did you learn about love? Who taught you about love? There are many things that are said about love, some are true, some are not.
There is no class in formal education that teaches about love. The closest thing that we have to it is sex education and not everyone can even agree on that. Many of these classes are under controversy with the threat of extinction. Love is a very important subject and many of us know nothing about it.
Lack of knowledge in a subject leads to many contradictions and false beliefs. It is amazing how many myths about love persist today. Our culture promotes the idea of love in movies, music, novels, and television shows and knows little about what real love is. The following are some false beliefs about love:
- The first false belief is "all anyone needs is love." Here is another version of that myth; "true love conquers all." If you believe this myth your life is going to be a lot harder than it needs to be. An example of this myth is two young lovers that believe that they can overcome any obstacle; from disapproving parents, bad backgrounds, or even poverty. The truth is that love is tough and it requires work, just like anything in life that has any value. Many couples do not know or understand this and they become discouraged and quit. This all could have been avoided if someone would have taught them this simple truth about life.
- There is only one love for everyone. This is a very common myth. The truth is that there are many possible partners for everyone.
- When you meet your true love you will see instant fireworks! This myth is probably the most popular of all. People actually believe that you will see each other from across the room and fall instantly in love. Love takes time and work and doesn't happen instantly.
- The sex is incredible; it must be true love! Although sex and love are commonly put into the same category they are not. It is totally possible to feel a strong sexually attraction without being in love.
- If I find my perfect mate, I will live happily ever after. The truth is that relationships are hard and you will have inevitable bumps in the road that will make you stronger as a couple or it will break your relationship. Life is about growth, and the two of you will need to meet each other's needs in order to grow together.
I know all of you have heard everyone of these myths and possibly believe even some of them to be true. None of the previous is true. Love helps, but you will need more than just love for your relationship to survive. In life you can have many true loves, not just one. Love takes time to evolve; it doesn't just happen instantly, that infatuation. Sex is not love, and you don't have to love someone to have sex with him or her. To sum it up, love is work, trust, compassion, compromise, and understanding. It takes time and effort and can be totally worth it.
